What’s next for the Harmon family? Is Tate and Vivien’s son really the Anti-Christ? Will Violet ever take Tate back? In the season one finale of American Horror Story on Dec. 21, fans were waiting for these, and many more, questions to be answered, but co-creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk sadly disappointed fans with the (although informative) open-ended finale.
With the expectation of a season two to answer these burning questions, the finale isn’t so disappointing. However, since the finale aired, Murphy has stated that the story of the Harmon family is finished, and season two of the thriller will feature a completely new plot line – new family, new location, new horror. So where does that leave the characters of season one?
Although Murphy’s reasoning makes sense – in order to keep the show as fast-paced and thrilling as season one, the continuation of the story of the Harmons as ghosts in the murder house would get boring – it still feels like the finale didn’t finish off the Harmon story. There are still way too many questions that, now, will never be answered – a disappointing end to what was a more than satisfying show.
Although the open-end to the Tate and Violet relationship was dissatisfying, that feeling was nowhere near the frustration and confusion that followed, as Tate and Vivien’s son was revealed (in the last scene of the season) to have brutally murdered his babysitter, and seemed pretty happy about the fact. This brings doubt into Murphy’s initial reasoning for finishing the story; how can you leave that kind of horror unfinished? A plot line involving the Anti-Christ on the loose would surely be interesting enough for a second season.
As fans are reluctant to say goodbye to the beloved (and twisted) characters from season one, they might not have to say goodbye completely. Murphy has revealed that some of the actors from season one may return in the new season, but as completely new characters (hopefully Jessica Lange will return and give another Golden-Globe-winning performance). Although they will be missed, it will be interesting to see which actors are chosen to fill the incredible void left by Connie Britton (Vivien Harmon), Dylan McDermott (Ben Harmon), Taissa Farmiga (Violet Harmon), and Evan Peters (Tate Langdon).
To hype fans up even more, Murphy has also stated that the clues as to what the second season will include can be found in the final three episodes of season one. Will it take place in a prison? a psychiatric hospital? Will it focus on Vivien’s sister in Florida? Audiences won’t have to wait much longer, as Murphy has stated that a cast and possible theme announcement should be made in February.
