National Poetry Month

Besides National Novel Writing Month in November, authors around the world also can choose to participate in National Poetry Writing Month, which is held during April.

Established by the American Academy of Poets,  the Purpose of National Poetry Month is to simply help poets come together to create good poetry.  There are many ways to celebrate, but one of the most common and easy ways is to write a poem every day for the month of April. Prizes, unlike NaNoWriMo, are not given out during National Poetry Writing Month.

National Poetry Month helps bring attention to the achievements of those famous poets in American history,  help make poetry more relevant in the school curriculum, and helps young poets tap into their creative  abilities and  share their work with other poets. Libraries, schools, and other organizations can get involved and celebrate National Poetry Month.

Even though April is just about over, anyone can still get involved, or at least get out a pen and a crisp piece of paper and crank out a few lines of  poetry. It’s also encouraged to display the NPM Logo in willing businesses, classrooms, or libraries to help spread awareness of this event.
