Can an app help you read faster?

Some people read for the pure enjoyment of it, but others read for speed. People have become obsessed with constantly trying to increase the rate of words in which they read per minute.  A new app “Spritz” premiered at Mobile World Congress this week and claims to be able to double or even triple your average reading pace. This new technology will be available to owners of the Samsung Galaxy S5 and Gear 2 Smartwatch this April.

We are used to moving our eyes from left to right when we read, because that’s how we were taught. Researchers are claiming that your eye finds a specific spot in each word called the “optimal recognition point”; looking at this particular letter is what lets you understand the meaning of the word. Punctuation allows your brain to catch up with your eyes in each sentence.

80% of your reading time is taken up by your eyes moving from word to word, and the other 20% is your brain absorbing the information.

Spritz shows words to you one at a time, centered around each optimal recognition point so that you don’t waste time moving your eye from word to word.
