The Pinellas County School Board building in Largo was filled with a surplus of young, agile minds on Wednesday, Feb. 26 for the Pinellas County Academic Bowl, with PHU facing 15 other teams from Pinellas County. The six seniors representing Palm Harbor—Seth Bacaner, Kevin Corkran, Emma Freeman, Aadith Moorthy, Mohamed Nuh and Connor Stappert—won first place in their final competition of the season, leaving them undefeated.

“We won 1st place,” Stappert said. “Supposedly everyone in the team wins $100. But more importantly, we won our coach the ability to be the coach of Pinellas County All-Star Academic Team.”

The competition consisted of two rounds, the Academic Team placing first with 320 points, winning by a margin of 80 points. During the following round, the team didn’t win by such a large margin but they still managed to place with 320 points, 40 points ahead of Largo, who placed second.

Academic Team coach Christopher Briggs supported the team all the while and helped them reach success.

“He’s been there all year for all of us,” Stappert said.
