As winter draws to a close, so too does the Winter Guard season, which began in January and has had four competitions thus far and has performed impressively.

“So far we’ve won 3rd, 2nd, 3rd and 3rd,” said senior Katherine Spencer. “Overall we are ranked 3 out of 14 in our state division.”

Twenty people are on the Winter Guard team. Their final competition will be taking place over Spring Break in Daytona from the 28 to the 30.

“[Guard] is really great,” senior Devin McCauley. “You get a bunch of new friends and you get a lot more coordination and you don’t fall on your face as much.”

The guard  team ranges in ages from freshman to senior. Because not everyone joins their freshman year and not everyone participates in both seasons, age levels and experience are all over the charts.

“It breaks the age barrier,” said Spencer. “There really is no room for ‘I am better than you’ going on. It’s more like, ‘how can we help each other succeed?'”
